Cows are moved for grazing along a sunken, wet dirt road in this scene of color and light. The high noon summer sun brightens the greens and blues, making this a vibrant scene of everyday life. Although the orientation of the piece, the linearity of the road and the line of birds are vertical, the composition comes across as flat, yet spatial. The ground rounds up to the farm house and down to the water, only to roll back up across to the adjacent shore. The trees, smoking chimney and tall grass seem to reach toward the birds as they take flight. A wonderful, balanced contrast of colors occurs as the bottom half of the composition embodies earthy browns and light greens, while the upper half compares an azure blue juxtaposing gray and white clouds.
